County firefighters put out a fire Sunday that broke out on the roof of a building housing a Bethesda nail and hair salon. There were no injuries, according to county fire officials.

Fire and rescue workers received a call before 1 p.m. that there was smoke in the building on the 7800 block of Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services. When they arrived at the scene, they found the fire was limited to the roof and were able to contain it within about 15 minutes.

The fire caused about $100,000 in damages, mostly to the structure of the building, he said.

The building where the fire broke out is split on its first level between DX Organic Nails and Spa and Bethesda Sunlighting. Both stores were open Monday morning.

The cause of the flames was most likely related to building materials used in repairs and left on the roof earlier in the week, Piringer said. Workers had been repairing a leak, and firefighters found a tar bucket and propane cylinder among the items damaged in the flames.
