More than 85 Montgomery County firefighters put out a blaze Wednesday night that tore through apartment homes in North Bethesda and caused several families to be displaced. There were no injuries.

The two-alarm fire broke out at the three-story Wickford Apartment building on the 10700 block of Hampton Mill Terrace at about 8 p.m., according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services spokesman Pete Piringer.

The fire raged through two apartments and the attic area of the building, causing firefighters to evacuate dozens of people, Piringer reported on Twitter.

The fire, which was extinguished by 9 p.m., resulted in more than $400,000 in damage. The Red Cross National Capital Region was called in to assist displaced residents.

The fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on a balcony, according to Piringer.
