Effort to paint rusting bridge sets off game of hot potato

The city of Gaithersburg is looking around for someone to paint a rusting bridge over Quince Orchard Road. The bridge ferries freight and passenger trains across the roadway, and the city first sent CSX Corp. a letter asking the company to spruce up the crossing. CSX, which owns most of Maryland’s rail lines, responded that the bridge was Montgomery County’s responsibility. The county, in turn, is claiming that the bridge is the State Highway Administration’s problem. State officials report that the bridge is in line to get painted in spring 2019. Advocates want county to pass bill protecting undocumented immigrants

CASA de Maryland, an immigrant advocacy group, wants Montgomery and Prince George’s counties to pass legislation protecting undocumented immigrants. Gustavo Torres, the group’s executive director, argues the laws are needed because of President Donald Trump’s stance on immigration. The measure supported by CASA would prevent local police and sheriff’s officers from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement in some cases. [The Washington Post]

Madaleno steps forward in debate over state response to Trump administration

A Maryland senator from Montgomery County is leading the debate over a bill that would make it easier for the state’s attorney general to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration. Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh is asking for authority to bring a suit against the Trump administration, but under current law, he’d first need permission from Gov. Larry Hogan. Sen. Richard Madaleno is championing a measure that would let Frosh move forward without Hogan's go-ahead. Debate over the bill sparked a Republican walkout Thursday on the state Senate floor in Annapolis. [Baltimore Sun]
