A celebrated Chinese chef is making progress on his flagship restaurant in downtown Bethesda.
Q by Peter Chang is now aiming for a late May opening, according to Gen Lee, business partner of chef Peter Chang.
Lee said Thursday the restaurant has received the required building permits from Montgomery County and construction has begun inside the 8,000-square-foot space on the ground floor of the glass-enclosed Carr Properties’ building at 4500 East West Highway. The location also includes a sizable outdoor patio.
Lee said applying for the permits presented more hurdles than he and Chang anticipate they’ll face during the construction process. A worker could be seen inside the restaurant Thursday framing drywall and doing other early construction work. Chang was initially planning for a March or April opening when he revealed plans for the flagship restaurant in July 2016.
The restaurant jumped another hurdle Thursday when the county Board of License Commissioners approved its application for a liquor license, according to Bethesda attorney Sean Morris, who represents the restaurant.

Q by Peter Chang is expected to showcase the chef’s spicy Sichuan cooking, which has earned him national acclaim and helped him launch a network of restaurants in Virginia and Maryland, including an outpost in Rockville Town Square. Chang plans to helm the kitchen in Bethesda.
Lee said the chef is staying busy in the meantime. On Friday, he’ll be cooking at the James Beard Foundation’s Chinese New Year Celebration in New York City. Chang’s menu includes lotus-leaf-wrapped striped bass, beef tenderloin with chili sauce and roasted pork buns.

Last year, Chang was named one of the James Beard Award finalists for Best Chef: Mid Atlantic. He was beaten out by Potomac native Aaron Silverman of Rose’s Luxury.
