The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission will hold a public budget hearing on a proposed rate hike at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Montgomery County Council Building, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville.
The utility is planning a 3.5 percent increase in water and sewer rates, which would cost the average homeowner an additional $1.47 or so a month, WSSC spokesman Luis Maya said.
For fiscal 2018, which begins July 1, WSSC is proposing a $4.4 million increase, or about 0.6 percent, over its current $740.8 million operating budget. The operating budget pays for day-to-day expenses.
The utility is planning a $6.4 million increase, or about 0.9 percent, over its current $696.7 million capital budget. The capital budget pays for long-term projects.
The WSSC also is planning a hearing at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8, at its headquarters at 14501 Sweitzer Lane, Laurel. The WSSC proposed budget can be found here.
The public hearing record will remain open until Feb. 16.
