U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin’s campaign is renting buses to ferry people into the nation’s capital on Jan. 21 for the Women’s March on Washington.
Raskin, a Montgomery County Democrat who took congressional office earlier this week, wanted to provide a rallying point for 8th District residents heading to the downtown demonstration. A campaign staffer estimated that their group will number several hundred.
“This is our effort to simplify things and bringing everyone together in one location,” said Aaron Jarboe, Raskin’s political director. “It’s just an effort to be as inclusive as possible.”
The march is scheduled for the day after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration and is meant to bring attention to women’s rights at the dawn of the new administration. Organizers reportedly expect the event to draw 200,000 people.
A number of elected officials are planning to accompany Raskin to the march, including state legislators and Montgomery County Council members Tom Hucker, George Leventhal and Hans Riemer. Jarboe said the event will also attract 8th District residents from Carroll and Frederick counties.
The group will eat breakfast together from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center before boarding the buses to head into D.C., according to an event flier.
Raskin’s campaign is covering the cost of the meal and buses, although participants are asked to donate if they are able, Jarboe said. The event was announced Thursday online and through an email to campaign supporters.
Jarboe said event organizers will order the buses once they have a better idea of how many people will be hitching a ride.
