Metro seeks $1 billion extra over 3 years from Maryland, Virginia and D.C.
The transit operator says the money is needed to cover capital investment into the Metro system to fix ongoing issues with rail cars and aging track. The additional investment would cost each jurisdiction about $250 million more—with Maryland’s investment jumping from $479 million to $727 million in fiscal 2020. [Washington Post]
Shady Grove Fertility moving clinical center
The Rockville-based in vitro fertilization center and fertility clinic is upgrading from its 37,000-square-foot facility to a new 50,000-square-foot facility at 9601 Blackwell Road that will feature two operating rooms, six embryo transfer rooms and 12 prep rooms. 19-year-old charged with arson in Cloverly house fire
The teen is facing the arson charge after a fire broke out at her family’s home on Sea Island Court in northern Silver Spring around 1 a.m. Dec. 16. The family attempted to put out the fire before calling firefighters, but were unsuccessful. [NBC4]
Former Montgomery County physician convicted in killing of his mental health counselor
John Lutz, 78, had been held at a psychiatric hospital since the 2002 slaying and was unable to stand trial for more than 10 years until this month. He was convicted of first-degree murder Friday by a jury in the death of his counselor, Nicole Castro. Prosecutors said he killed her after she came to his White Oak apartment for a therapy session.
