A Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School teacher who took inappropriate photos of teenage girls in his anatomy and physiology class was found guilty of two counts of child sex abuse during a bench trial Tuesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
Todd Michael Scriber, 38, of Gaithersburg, faces up to 25 years in prison on each count. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 24, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Montgomery County police said in charging documents they arrested Scriber after a 14-year-old girl told officers that Scriber appeared to be trying to take a photo of her under her skirt with his cell phone while she turned in a science exam on Oct. 2, 2015. A detective later spoke with Scriber at the high school four days later and asked to look at his phone. Police said multiple photos were found on Scriber’s phone of fully-clothed girls’ buttocks, legs and breasts—all of which appeared to be taken without the girls’ knowledge. After obtaining a search warrant for the phone, police determined the photos were taken in Scriber’s classroom.
Police said the photos were of two 17-year-old and one 16-year-old girls who were his students.
Scriber was put on leave by Montgomery County Public Schools when the allegations surfaced in October 2015 and he later resigned in February 2016, according to schools spokesman Derek Turner.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Ramon Korionoff said Scriber faced the child sex abuse charges because he was a teacher and the girls were in his “care and custody” at the time the incidents occurred.
Scriber started teaching at B-CC in 2009, according to a school newsletter, and taught at Watkins Mill High School in Gaithersburg before moving to B-CC.
