New Upscale Diner Community Opens in Bethesda

The restaurant is offering limited dinner service this week

Restaurateur Mark Bucher’s new Community diner opened Tuesday night after a nearly two-year planning and construction process.

The restaurant is serving a limited dinner menu starting at 5 p.m. until it ramps up to full operations, which will include breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night service. During dinner service Tuesday night, classic and contemporary rock played in the background as patrons chose from a menu that featured diner classics as well as more upscale fare.

The interior of the restaurant features a curving lunch counter with stools, retro orange chairs, wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling windows. It has a 1970s chic look.

The project was first announced in January 2015 as the 7770 Norfolk Apartment Building was still under construction. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the building near the corner of Fairmont and Norfolk avenues.

The restaurant has a walk-up window where patrons can purchase coffee and donuts.

Bucher is building a second restaurant, Medium Rare, adjacent to Community on Fairmont Avenue. The sign for Medium Rare went up earlier this week.

Bucher also operates two Medium Rare restaurants in Washington, D.C., which are known for their steak dinners and brunch.
