The Montgomery County Board of Elections said turnout Thursday totaled 22,498 voters, the highest the county had recorded on the first day of early voting since it was first offered in 2010.
The previous highest turnout total was 4,376 in 2014, before the Potomac early voting center opened last year, elections spokeswoman Margie Roher said Friday.
To put the numbers in perspective, Roher said that in 2010, with five early voting sites, the voter turnout was 4.66 percent for the entire early voting period. On Thursday, the turnout was 3.0 percent in one day.
High-voter turnout on Thursday led to parking issues at six of the 10 early voting centers, according to a message from Alert Montgomery sent about 5 p.m.
The number of ballots tallied at each of the 10 early voting centers was:
Silver Spring Civic Building, 3,100;
