Bethesda native Capt. Kirk takes helm of futuristic destroyer
The parallels to Star Trek were inevitable, but Capt. James Kirk took the ribbing in stride as he took the helm of the Navy’s largest destroyer, the U.S.S. Zumwalt, last week. The Bethesda native will be guiding the $4.4 billion, 610-foot-long technologically advanced stealth warship from Maine to its home port in San Diego over the next three months. [New York Times]

Germantown “demon assassin” pleads guilty
Zakieya Avery pleaded guilty Monday in Montgomery County Circuit Court to stabbing her 18-month-old son and 2-year-old daughter to death, as well as to attacking her other two children, who survived. Avery and her roommate reportedly carried out the attacks in January 2014 because they believed the children had been overtaken by demons. The guilty plea set up an immediate trial that will continue Tuesday to determine if Avery was criminally insane at the time of the killings. [Washington Post]
Delegate from Bethesda calls for expanded powers for Metro’s inspector general
Del. Marc Korman penned an open letter with Prince George’s County Del. Erek Barron asking that Metro fold its inspector general into a new safety oversight commission. Multivehicle crash backs up outer loop of 495
The crash between Georgia and Connecticut avenues around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning left all lanes of the outer loop blocked and resulted in backups of more than four miles. It was cleared around 7 a.m. [Twitter]
