The Montgomery Housing Partnership is accepting donations for victims of an explosion and fire at the Silver Spring apartment complex. Two people were killed, 34 people were injured and about 100 people were displaced after the Wednesday night explosion in the Long Branch area, which authorities suspect may have been caused by a gas leak. Teen victim tells police that pair arrested for prostitution forced her to have sex more than 200 times
The teen, who county police say is 15, told investigators that Atuan Rogers, 34, and Dierra Thomas, 19, both of Fort Washington, prostituted her at a Silver Spring hotel for 2 ½ months. Rogers and Thomas have been charged with human trafficking and police are concerned there may be other victims. [Washington Post]
Democrats again at odds with Hogan over transportation scoring bill
Gov. Larry Hogan and state Democratic officials are feuding over when the scoring bill goes into effect after the administration asked counties last month for extensive studies of their transportation projects. However, an assistant attorney general told a Democratic state lawmaker the law won’t go into effect until 2017. The law, passed over Hogan’s veto, aims to bring more transparency to the process of funding state transportation projects. [Baltimore Sun]
Heat advisory in effect, with heat wave expected throughout the weekend
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m. Friday with the high predicted to reach 96 degrees. This weekend the heat will continue with the heat index topping 100 Saturday and the high reaching 95 degrees Sunday.
