Weekend Events: Outdoor Movies and ’80s Nostalgia

Bethesda Outdoor Movie Series—Thursday, Friday and Saturday—Corner of Norfolk and Auburn Avenues, Bethesda

Catch the last three nights of Bethesda’s annual outdoor movie series. In its 11th year, the Bethesda Urban Partnership event features screenings at the plaza at the intersection of Norfolk and Auburn Avenues in downtown Bethesda. On Thursday, the 2015 Oscar nominee romance Brooklyn will be screened, followed by culture-clash comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding on Friday and critical and commercial hit Creed on Saturday.

The free screenings begin at 9 p.m. Some seating is provided, but organizers also encourage viewers to bring their own lawn chairs.

Molly Ringwald with Dave Damiani & the No Vacancy Orchestra—Thursday—Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club

A Hollywood actress known for starring roles in the John Hughes movies Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club, Molly Ringwald takes the stage at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club on Thursday. Backed by Dave Damiani & the No Vacancy Orchestra—themselves fixtures of XM radio and supper club regulars—Ringwald will perform classics in a tribute to Nat King Cole and his daughter, Natalie Cole.

Tickets are $40 on the day of show. The performance begins at 8 p.m.

Back to the ’80s—Friday—The Fillmore, Silver Spring

The Fillmore’s ‘80s night is set to be packed with timely throwbacks: tribute band the New Romance will play songs of the decade, the bar will offer themed cocktail specials and guests can compete for a cash prize in a contest for the best Reagan-era costume.

Cornhole tournament—Saturday—Cabin John Shopping Center and Mall

There’s room for the competitive and casual cornholer alike at the Cabin John tournament featuring the popular lawn game Saturday. With matches that promise regulation rules and require team registry, serious players can vie for prizes and sportsmanly success. Less-involved players can throw bags into the boards with holes in them at their own pace at the available open play spaces.

The event, sponsored by Lafayette Federal Credit Union, runs from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Storytime Live!—Saturday—Kiddie Academy, Gaithersburg

Child care provider Kiddie Academy is hosting a reading event Saturday with a special guest—children’s book icon Curious George. The monkey character will enliven the storytelling scene, which will include other activities and refreshments.

The free 11 a.m. event is open to the academy’s current students and any other families.

The Chuck Brown Band—Friday—Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club, Bethesda

The legacy of the late funk legend and “Godfather of Go-Go” Chuck Brown lives on with the band that toured at his side. The Chuck Brown Band will play at the supper club Friday, touting old favorites from the music luminary and from the home-grown genre of go-go, which originated in D.C. in the 1960s.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $25.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra—Thursday—The Music Center at Strathmore, North Bethesda

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is coming to Strathmore for a performance of “Bach and Blue”: bringing together classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s orchestral suite with American composer George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and other pieces.

Tickets are $25 to $55 for the 8 p.m. show.

The Tone Rangers and Flo Anito—Friday—AMP by Strathmore, Rockville

D.C. favorites the Tone Rangers and Flo Anito team up for a night of music and comedy at AMP by Strathmore on Friday. The Tone Rangers are an a cappella group that incorporate humor into its songs, which includes a medley that covers the 900-year history of Western music. Flo Anito and her jazz-pop style return to the area from a European tour.

Tickets are $20 to $30 for the 8 p.m. performance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
