Weekend Events: Water Circus in Gaithersburg; Rent Comes to Rockville

Cirque Italia water circus—Friday-Sunday—Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds, Gaithersburg

The first traveling water circus in the country comes to the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds with its acrobats, aerialists and a stage consisting of a 35,000-gallon water tank. In its third year returning to Gaithersburg, Cirque Italia features acts including jugglers and contortionists and a set that lifts into the air. The circus doesn’t use animals, but it does promise appearances from a dinosaur and a mermaid.

Tickets are $10 to $50, and performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, as well as an 8:30 p.m. show Saturday.

Rent—Friday—F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, Rockville

F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre kicks off its run of the hit rock musical Rent with an 8 p.m. performance Friday. The Tony-winning musical, which ran for 12 years on Broadway, tells the story of struggling artists living in Manhattan’s East Village.

The play will be performed eight times at the Rockville venue through the month, with evening showings on July 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23 and matinees July 17 and 24. Tickets are $22.The Spinners—Friday—Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club

A Motown phenomenon that’s been performing since 1954 and still touring strong, The Spinners will bring its particular brand of R&B that’s garnered a series of hits. Known for songs like “I Came Around” and “Then Came You,” the band still includes original member Henry Fambrough, who’s joined by four singers and backed by a five-piece band. Tickets are $55 to $75 for the 8 p.m. show.

The band that reared rock legends Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck when they were still fledgling musicians, The Yardbirds has a comfortable roost in rock history. Its new touring lineup, including original member Jim McCarty, will perform the band’s R&B-influenced proto-heavy metal at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club Sunday. Tickets are $35 for the 8 p.m. show.

Rochelle Rice—Friday—AMP by Strathmore, North Bethesda

Rochelle Rice, an artist known for her frequent performances in the Washington area, debuts her album at Strathmore’s AMP on Friday. Rice will perform songs from Wonder, which presents her style of jazz with hints of soul and pop. Doors open at 6:30 for the 8 p.m. show, and tickets are $20 to $30.

Shenandoah Run—Saturday—AMP by Strathmore, North Bethesda

The nine-piece, Washington-based folk act Shenandoah Run comes to AMP by Strathmore with its blend of bluegrass and Irish jigs. The band’s set includes a few originals as well as covers as it celebrates the history of Americana and folk.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $30 to $40, with some proceeds going to the nonprofit Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being to benefit local animals without homes.

Basketball training—Friday and Sunday—Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center, Potomac

Montgomery County Recreation is hosting a training event for residents of all ages interested in improving their skills on the court. The free basketball training will include fundamentals and games and runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
