Loud bangs in the sky may not be coming from fireworks in Montgomery County this July 4.
National Weather Service meteorologist Brian LaSorsa said Friday morning forecasters are monitoring a storm system that could bring prolonged rain and scattered thunderstorms sometime during the afternoon and evening of July 4.
“The timing is a little uncertain at this time,” LaSorsa said. “The best chance is it hits late Monday… but it could hold off for several hours or come in hours earlier.”
He said forecasters are about 60 percent confident the storms will hit Monday. The impending weather could put planned fireworks and Independence Day celebrations into jeopardy—including those at the National Mall and throughout Montgomery County.
“Obviously, if you’re doing something that’s dependent on the weather, you’re going to want to keep a close eye on the forecast for safety and planning purposes,” LaSorsa said.
Public July 4 fireworks shows are planned in Kensington, Germantown, Gaithersburg, Rockville and Takoma Park. The Kensington and Germantown displays are hosted by the county and a rain date for both events is scheduled for July 5. Individuals should check the county or Rockville’s website before attending if storms hit. Rockville doesn't have a rain date for its event.
The City of Gaithersburg’s July 4 celebration is held “rain or shine,” although the city’s website notes officials will make weather-related decisions “with the safety of organizers, participants and spectators of this event in mind.” Those planning to attend can check for weather-related updates on the city’s website.
Takoma Park’s fireworks will take place on the “next clear evening” if it rains, according to the town’s website.
Correction: The City of Rockville does not have a rain date for its July 4 celebration.
