County Chamber honors County Council president, other local leaders
The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce will recognize local business and community leaders at its 57th annual dinner Thursday night. Among the recipients are Bell Nursery USA, located in Burtonsville, which will receive the Visionary of the Year Award for its contributions to the county as it grew from a local family-owned business into the largest producer of wholesale flowers and plants in the Eastern U.S., and County Council President Nancy Floreen, who will receive the Legislator of the Year Award in honor of her 30 years of public service.
Here are the other award winners:
- Public Sector Partner of the Year Award: National Institutes of Health (NIH), to be accepted by Dr. Lawrence Tabak, principal deputy director;
- Business Advocate of the Year Award: Lawrence Duncan III, vice president of Federal & State Government Relations & PAC Affairs, Lockheed Martin Corp.; and
- Chairman’s Award: Leslie Ford Weber, director of Campus and Government & Community Affairs, Montgomery County, for Johns Hopkins University.
The Chamber of Commerce will also name its new board of directors at the dinner at the Bethesda North Marriott and County Conference Center. More than 800 local business and government leaders are expected to attend, according to the chamber.
Salons set to open in Bethesda
BlueBell Hair Salon & Spa is set to open in about two weeks in the Lionsgate Condominium building on Woodmont Avenue, according to its management. The salon is looking to hire a hair stylist, esthetician, receptionist and shampoo assistant, according to a sign displayed on the property.
Also, the national chain Phenix Salon Suites is conducting a soft opening around June 21 and a grand opening in late August for its new Bethesda location, said Nancy Davis, a managing member of the Bethesda branch. Phenix Salon Suites, which operates a salon in Laurel and more than 100 around the country, offers suites for rent to hair professionals, according to the company.
Located on East West Highway, the local salon will offer premium suites and six double suites, more than what’s offered at many of its other locations, according to Davis. A full-time receptionist will be on staff, and the salon will provide free sparkling water, coffee and tea to clients.
Pike Central Farm Market gains new sponsor
The Pike Central Farm Market in North Bethesda has a new sponsor: Rockville’s Progressions salon spa store. The spa, which is located near the White Flint Metro station, will operate a stand at the market, where visitors can meet stylists and “try out the latest in playful hair color,” according to a release from the spa. The market at 6001 Executive Boulevard in North Bethesda is open from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays through November and hosts 40 vendors, featuring everything from locally grown produce and baked goods to wine tastings.
