The owners of a Silver Spring restaurant are opening a new comfort food restaurant in Kensington this summer.
Zena Polin and Jerry Hollinger, owners of the Grubb Road restaurant The Daily Dish, are behind the new concept, which will be called The Dish & Dram.
The restaurant will replace the neighborhood bistro Sub*Urban Trading Co., which opened in 2008 at 10301 Kensington Parkway. In a Facebook post, restaurant owner Alison Cavallaro wrote she is closing the restaurant to move to California.
“Thank you to all of our friends and customers that have supported us for the past eight years, many of you from the very beginning!” Cavallaro wrote. She estimates the business baked about 90,000 scones and made 60,000 panini during its eight-year run. Sub*Urban’s last day serving dinner will be June 11 and it will stop serving lunch after June 16.
Polin said Tuesday she and Hollinger are planning to open The Dish & Dram in mid-July and the eatery will offer a similar menu to the 6-year-old Daily Dish, which serves seasonal Mid-Atlantic fare and pizzas. However, the new restaurant will have more of an “international flair,” according to Polin. She added that the bar will serve a range of cocktails, whiskey, wine and beer.
“We’re planning dishes that you’ll want to sit down and share with your friends from home and abroad,” Polin said.
Polin said she first visited Kensington to view the restaurant space after finding out it was for sale a month and a half ago. She was immediately enamored of the town.
“I kept saying to Jerry, ‘Look at these cute antique shops, look at how neat this is,’ ” Polin said, noting that while she has catered in residential areas in Kensington in the past, she had never passed through the town. “It’s a really cool town. We’re very excited about it.”
In a nod to Cavallaro, Polin said they plan to serve Sub*Urban’s lamb mole at The Dish & Dram.
