Week Ahead: County Budget To Be Formally Approved; Purple Line Meeting Thursday

County budget scheduled to be formally approved Thursday

The Montgomery County Council is scheduled Thursday to formally approve the county’s $5.3 billion fiscal 2017 operating budget and $4.6 billion six-year capital improvement budget, which this year includes an 8.7 percent property tax increase and an increase in the recordation tax. The council unanimously approved both tax increases last week.

Purple Line informational meeting in Silver Spring

Maryland transit and county transportation officials will participate in an informational meeting about the Purple Line 7 p.m. Thursday at the Silver Spring Civic Building. The meeting will focus on how the light-rail line and its construction will impact businesses and residents along Wayne Avenue—particularly near the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Dale Drive. Members of the team chosen to build the project—Purple Line Transit Partners—are also scheduled to attend the meeting. Controversy surrounding this stretch in Silver Spring includes the county ceding part of Wayne Avenue to the state as well as noise concerns and the possibility of increased density.

Suburban Hospital to hold construction ceremony Tuesday

The Bethesda hospital is hosting the 1 p.m. event to commemorate the start of construction of its new garage and clinical building. The garage will be built first at the site along Old Georgetown Road, followed by construction of the 300,000-square–foot hospital addition that will house new surgical and patient facilities.

Only some rain expected this week

There’s a chance of thunderstorms Monday afternoon when the high is expected to reach around 70 degrees, but Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are all expected to be partly sunny with highs reaching the low 80s, according to the National Weather Service. There’s a chance of thunderstorms Friday with a high predicted around 85 degrees. Nighttime lows are expected to drop into the mid-60s this week.
