County Council scheduled to formally approve Westbard Sector Plan

After more than a year and a half of debate, Montgomery County Council members are scheduled Tuesday to approve updates to the Westbard Sector Plan that will guide development in the Bethesda neighborhood for the next three decades. The council gave its preliminary approval to the plan in March. The plan, if fully built out, would add about 1,200 new residential units to the area surrounding Westbard Avenue. Residents in the area have held protests and regularly criticized the plan that they say would bring too many new residents to the suburban enclave.

Chevy Chase Land Co. submitted plans last month to the Montgomery County Planning Board to renovate the shopping center to create smaller retail and restaurant spaces.

UPDATE: Red Line maintenance continues

Update – 2:45 p.m. – The Red Line in the Bethesda area will continue to undergo a “maintenance surge” this week during midday and evening hours. The surge is being undertaken to attempt to address water leaking issues that have been linked to arcing insulator incidents in the tunnel below Bethesda. Metro said Monday in an advisory the maintenance surge, which will cause trains to single-track between the Van Ness and Medical Center stations, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to close Monday through Thursday.

Metro had originally planned to end the surge and resume normal service Monday, but spokeswoman Sherri Ly said "Based on progress we're making, we're going to continue the surge through the week."
