County police investigating swastika graffiti in Rockville

Police on Sunday found swastikas spray-painted at Welsh Park on Mannakee Street and at Beall Elementary School in Rockville. A witness told police he saw two teenage boys spray-painting swastikas in a wooded area near the school, but police were not able to locate the suspects. [Montgomery County police]

Another arcing insulator reported near Friendship Heights Metro station

Metro temporarily closed the station Wednesday morning for about 30 minutes after the arcing insulator was reported. Trains were backed up due to single-tracking between Friendship Heights and Medical Center, but full service resumed around 8:45 a.m. An arcing insulator Saturday night at the station led to smoke in the tunnel and trains being evacuated, but no one was seriously injured. Fatal crashes increase in Maryland

State transportation officials say 520 people died in traffic-related crashes on Maryland roads in 2015, an increase from the 442 deaths reported in 2014. Bicycle fatalities doubled from five in 2014 to 10 in 2015 and there was a 26 percent increase in young driver-involved fatalities. Deputy Transportation Secretary Jim Ports said the increase in fatalities is “a call to action to strengthen and expand our efforts to save lives on our roads.” [Maryland Department of Transportation]
