Primary election Tuesday

Maryland’s primary election is Tuesday and local Democratic and Republican voters have plenty of competitive races to weigh in on. The District 8 Democratic congressional primary is one of the most expensive House races ever, with businessman David Trone of Potomac, state Sen. Jamie Raskin of Takoma Park and former Marriott International executive Kathleen Matthews of Chevy Chase seen as the leading contenders to win. There’s also a competitive school board race pitting longtime board member Phil Kauffman against a group of challengers for his at-large seat. The state’s Democratic and Republican presidential primaries will also take place Tuesday, with Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump favored to win. And voters will finally decide between Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Donna Edwards in the feisty Democratic primary for retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski’s U.S. Senate seat. Republicans will also choose Tuesday which candidate to run against Rep. John Delaney in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District.

County Council to continue budget work

The council will continue its work on the fiscal 2017 budget during work sessions Monday, where members will review the budgets for the Office of Human Rights, libraries and the Department of Permitting Services.

At its meeting Tuesday, the council is scheduled to take action on proposed revisions to contracts with the government employees’, firefighters’ and police unions that would reduce proposed salary increases. If approved, the county would need to renegotiate contracts with the unions.

A public hearing on a bill that would allow senior citizens who live in the county to offset property tax payments until they sell their homes is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
