Denizens Brewing Co. to start canning beer

It won’t be long until fans of the Silver Spring brewery can crack open a can of Denizens beer. The brewery that got its start serving its beer only at its Silver Spring brewpub and then selling it in kegs to local restaurants will begin offering its beer in cans this spring, according to marketing manager Jack Basso.

Basso said Denizens received the new canning line last week and is in the process of setting it up inside the East West Highway brewery. Basso wouldn’t offer specifics, however, about what beers will be released in cans and when, but she said cans will first be sold at the brewery and then the business will  explore retail store sales.

“We have a lot of growth right now and we’re keeping things under wraps until we can talk about it all at once,” Basso said Wednesday.

Chef Mike Isabella’s new Greek restaurant Kapnos Kouzina on Woodmont Avenue is stocking its shelves with Greek sodas, Kalamata olives, gigante beans and balsamic vinegar that it will begin selling to customers at the restaurant April 11. Greek products that have been displayed on shelves inside the restaurant were initially a design feature, but customers have been asking if they could purchase the items, according to Isabella.

“These are all products we stand by and many of them we use on our own menu,” Executive Chef George Pagonis said in a statement. The products include “the best Greek coffee and olive oil you can buy in the U.S. The olive oil comes from Sparta, which is also where our family originally hails from.”

Kapnos is calling the in-restaurant market “The Greek Pantry” and many of the more than 30 items are sourced from the Greek importer Olympus Foods.

Pike & Rose hosting spring pig roast

Rocklands Barbeque will be roasting a whole hog later April 17 on Grand Park Avenue at this event that’s being billed as a Pike & Rose community block party. The pig roast starts at noon and runs until 4 p.m. The event also includes sidewalk sales, a complimentary bourbon tasting, live music from AMP by Strathmore and other food from Pike & Rose restaurants such as Summer House Santa Monica, Del Frisco’s Grille and City Perch. Tickets to the event are $20 for adults in advance and $25 the day of the event.

Black Market Bistro launching afternoon tea service

Black Market Bistro’s quaint setting in an old post office along train tracks in Garrett Park gives it an old-world feel—a natural fit for tea service, according to the restaurant. Starting April 7, the restaurant will host a weekly afternoon tea service from 2 to 3:30 p.m. that includes assorted sandwiches and pastries. Executive Chef Jacqueline Castaldo is planning a menu with items including finger sandwiches filled with salmon and cucumber, prosciutto with fig jam or turkey and arugula; pastries such as currant scones and chocolate butter loaf cake; and a selection of Harney & Sons teas. The tea service costs $25 per person.
