Smith will start July 1 at an annual salary of $275,000

The Montgomery County Board of Education on Tuesday approved a four-year contract for Jack Smith, the interim state superintendent the board had previously selected for superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Smith will start at MCPS on July 1. Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers is set to retire the day before.

Smith’s four-year contract includes an annual salary of $275,000, plus $40,000 annually in deferred compensation and a $19,875 annual contribution toward his retirement plan. Smith will also get health, disability and life insurance benefits, plus moving expenses and the use of a school system-owned vehicle.

The board said it completed contract negotiations with Smith on Monday.

“Dr. Smith brings tremendous expertise both at the district and state level with him to Montgomery County. These experiences will help him jump right in as we work together to give every student the best possible education,” board President Michael Durso said in a statement.
