Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards – Friday night – Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club
Six songwriters will compete for the $10,000 grand prize while three young songwriters will vie for a $2,500 prize during the second annual singing and songwriting competition Friday night at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club. Two Bethesda residents are among those competing for the top prizes. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets range from $10 to $15.
Flamenco Vivo: Poema de Andalucia – Friday night – The Music Center at Strathmore, North Bethesda
Flamenco Vivo specializes in the signature dance of the Andalusian provinces of Spain. The colorful show at Strathmore includes songs and dances inspired by daily life in southern Spain. The New York-based dance company is celebrating its 32nd season this year. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets range from $28 to $72.
Slayer – Saturday night – The Fillmore Silver Spring
Thrash metal band Slayer will rock The Fillmore Saturday night as part of its Repentless tour. The band is known for its head-banging jams including “Seasons in The Abyss” and “Raining Blood.” It has a loyal following as well—only resale tickets ranging from $85 to $165 are available for Saturday’s show, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
Israel Dance Festival D.C. – events Saturday and Sunday – multiple locations
The festival begins with a party/Harkada Saturday night starting at 8 p.m. at B’nai Israel Congregation, 6301 Montrose Road, Rockville, followed by the main event Sunday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m. at Bullis School, 10601 Falls Road, Potomac. The festival includes dancing to Horas, Chasidic-inspired tunes and modern Israeli pop music. Tickets to both events are $25 for adults and $20 for students. Tickets for the performance only is $20 for adults and $15 for students, while tickets to the dance party are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
Robin Hood – multiple shows this weekend – F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, Rockville
This is the last weekend to see the Victorian Lyric Opera Co.’s comic opera version of Robin Hood. Actors will perform this version of the classic tale of the bandit who steals from the rich to give to the poor at 8 pm. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $28 for adults, $24 for seniors and $20 for students. The theater is at 603 Edmonston Drive, Rockville.
