A Silver Spring man was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for robbing three banks in Silver Spring, Rockville and Hagerstown over the span of nine days in July.

Tony Linn Smith, 56, pleaded guilty to bank robbery in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt after being arrested by Montgomery County police in July. Police linked Smith to a July 17 robbery of an M&T Bank in Hagerstown as well as a July 23 robbery of a Sun Trust Bank on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring and the July 25 robbery of an M&T Bank on West Edmonston Drive in Rockville.

Smith stole a total of $5,100 in the three robberies, according to prosecutors. Police said Smith presented a note that said he had a gun when demanding money from tellers during the robberies.

Prosecutors said that when the July robberies occurred, Smith was on probation after being released from prison after serving an eight-year prison sentence for a bank robbery in Virginia.
