Weekend Events: Two New Plays Begin in Kensington and Bethesda; Buddy Holly Tribute Concert

The Laramie Project – Friday night premiere – The Armory, Kensington

Kensington Arts Theatre is putting on this play about the brutal kidnapping, beating and death of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming, in October 1998. Shepard was targeted because he was gay. The show premieres Friday at 8:15 p.m. and shows are scheduled for Feb. 6- 7, 12-14, and 19-20. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and $15 for Kensington residents.

Jack and Phil, Slayers of Giants-INC – multiple shows this weekend – Imagination Stage, Bethesda

Imagination Stage’s latest production is an adaptation of the classic fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. In the play, Jack, a popular kid, and his friend Phil attempt to help Jack’s mother, who is facing foreclosure, by selling his grandfather’s watch at a pawn shop. However, rather than receiving money, they are paid with magic beans that grow into a giant beanstalk with a giant living at the top. Multiple shows are scheduled this weekend. The play, which premiered Wednesday, runs until March 13. Tickets start at $10

Buddy Holly Tribute concert – Saturday night – Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club

Coinciding with the 57th anniversary of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, a number of musicians will play the Bethesda venue in honor of the rock ’n’ roll legend. Performers include the David Kitchen Band, Flea Bops, Rock-A-Sonics and Ruthie and the Wranglers. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20.

Mozart’s Haffner Symphony – Saturday and Sunday – The Music Center at Strathmore, North Bethesda

The National Philharmonic will play with pianist Brian Ganz to perform works by Rossini, Chopin and Mozart. The show will finish with Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, “Haffner,” which takes its name from a wealthy businessman who helped fund the young composer. The Saturday show starts at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s show begins at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $29 to $78.

Classic rock cover band The VI-Kings will perform hits from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Credence Clearwater Revival and other bands Saturday night. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15 to $25.

Shy Glizzy – Sunday night – The Fillmore Silver Spring

Washington, D.C.-based rapper Shy Glizzy will take The Fillmore stage Sunday night in a show that starts at 8. The 23-year-old rapper released his latest mixtape Young Jefe in February 2014 that includes his hit “Awwsome.” Tickets are $30.
