A Pennsylvania-based developer with a growing presence in Bethesda announced Monday it has purchased the 8008 Wisconsin Avenue project from Washington, D.C.-based Douglas Development.
Toll Brothers City Living, a division within the Toll Brothers company, said in a press release it plans to convert the proposed 14-story building into about 100 luxury condominium units with concierge services, a landscaped rooftop terrace, fitness center and underground parking.
In 2013, Douglas Development purchased the property, which includes the storefront that housed the Ranger Surplus store, and began the county’s approval process for a 14-story building of about 140 rental apartment units.
But Douglas hit a speed bump early, when county officials said any new construction on the site would require the developer to give up extra right-of-way to allow a future bus rapid transit station and route on Wisconsin Avenue. It was the first redevelopment project to be impacted by the new right-of-way rules in the county’s 2013 master plan for bus rapid transit.
Toll Brothers City Living must complete the county Planning Department’s project approval process.
Toll Brothers City Living, which is also behind the under-construction Hampden Row condo project at Hampden Lane and Arlington Road, said it hopes to begin construction at 8008 Wisconsin in the summer of 2017. Condo sales could start at the building in the winter of 2017, according to the press release.
“With the strong interest we are seeing at Hampden Row, our first Bethesda Toll Brothers City Living building, we are extremely excited to be expanding our City Living brand in the highly-desirable Bethesda market, while further increasing the Toll Brothers urban footprint in the DC metro area,” Toll Brothers CEO Douglas Yearley Jr. said in the press release.
Toll Brothers also is planning a mix of 328 town homes and single-family detached homes in a new neighborhood on the 75-acre WMAL radio towers site in Bethesda.
