Montgomery County fire department officials are looking for the two men they say saved a driver from a burning vehicle on Rockville Pike in Bethesda.
The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) got a call at 10:02 a.m. Thursday for a car fire on northbound Rockville Pike at Grosvenor Lane.
When fire crews arrived, the man who had been driving the car was standing nearby uninjured. MCFRS didn’t identify the driver.
After crews put out the fire, the driver told firefighters he was stopped at the traffic signal. When the light turned green, the vehicle wouldn’t accelerate. The driver said drivers in other vehicles started pointing at him and at the front of his car.
The driver told firefighters he didn’t realize his car was on fire until smoke started to creep into the passenger compartment. He tried to unlock the vehicle door but the electric lock switch didn’t work. He told fire officials he panicked and didn’t think to manually unlock the door.
Witnesses to the incident said two men then broke through the rear driver’s side window and pulled the driver out of the burning car.
Fire officials said the two men were no longer on the scene when fire crews arrived.
MCFRS would like to honor the two men and is asking anyone with information about their identities to email fire.pio@montgomerycountymd.gov.
