Mellow Mushroom Rockville looking at spring opening
Mellow Mushroom, the pizza restaurant that’s under construction at the former Oro Pomodoro location at Rockville Town Square, is looking at a mid- to late-April opening, according to the company. The chain, which launched in Atlanta in 1974, is known for its unique pizzas such as the red-skin potato pie that comes with roasted red potatoes, bacon, cheddar and mozzarella cheese. The Rockville restaurant will be its first in Maryland, although it has had a regional presence with a restaurant that’s been open in Adams Morgan in Washington, D.C., for many years.
Smashburger plans February opening in Twinbrook

The new Smashburger coming to the newly-opened Galvan apartment building at 1800 Rockville Pike is planning to open in late February, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday. The new restaurant will be the burger chain’s 14th location in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro area. The chain also operates restaurants in Bethesda and Gaithersburg.
Waredaca Brewing Company celebrates opening with ribbon-cutting ceremony

Montgomery County’s newest brewery, Waredaca Brewing Co. in Laytonsville, celebrated its December opening Tuesday with local officials who were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The brewery grows many of its beers’ ingredients at the farm where it’s located. County Executive Ike Leggett and County Council members George Leventhal and Hans Riemer were on hand. The Laytonsville brewery, which is about 40 minutes north of Bethesda, hosts live music in its taproom on Saturday nights and is open Thursday and Friday evenings as well as Saturday and Sunday nights, according to its website. Waredaca currently offers eight types of beers, including an IPA, saison, coffee stout and Belgian “dubbel.”
CurvyMama Pies to host two baking classes next month
Catherine Gewertz, a journalist and baker who runs CurvyMama Pies in Bethesda, will host pie-making workshops on Feb. 7 and March 6. Gewertz says the sessions will focus on making crust. Each session runs from noon to 4:30 p.m. and the workshops are $125 per person. Gewertz sells a variety of her pies, such as sour cream apple, coconut cream and French silk, for $24 each on the CurvyMama Pies website.
