Week Ahead: County Council to Hold Public Hearing on Taxicab Regulations; Cold Temperatures Predicted

County Council to hold public hearing on taxicab credit card transactions – The council Tuesday afternoon is scheduled to discuss a bill that would limit the amount a taxi company can charge a driver for processing a credit card transaction. The bill aims to cut down on high credit card fees that council members have said place an unnecessary cost on drivers. The bill would also make it easier for drivers to use their own credit card processing systems, rather than rely on the one provided by the taxicab company

Cold start, then possible snow this week – The temperature may rise above freezing by Wednesday. The National Weather Service predicts a chilly start to the week with temperatures Monday and Tuesday expected to top out at 26 degrees, with nighttime lows around 15 degrees. Wednesday is expected to be a little warmer, with a mostly sunny high of 34 degrees, followed by a similarly cold, but sunny Thursday. A significant snow storm is possible Friday and continuing into Saturday, although meteorologists say it’s too early to tell what the storm may bring to the area.

Martin Luther King Jr. tribute at The Music Center at Strathmore – County Executive Ike Leggett will host a tribute and celebration of King from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday at Strathmore in North Bethesda. This year, the annual event is titled “Renewing the Dream: Hope in Today’s Times.” The event is free and free parking is available in the adjacent Grosvenor/Strathmore garage.

Board of Education to review operating budget – The Montgomery County school board is scheduled to meet 6 p.m. Tuesday as well as 6 p.m. Thursday at 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, to discuss the fiscal 2017 operating budget. The work sessions will look at changes in enrollment growth, salaries and funding requirements for the school system as well as look at the funding requests for specific offices, such as the Office of Special Education and the Office of Student Services and Engagement.
