Butchers Alley Opens Across From Bethesda Fish Market

The two shops have the same ownership

Longtime Bethesda fish market Pescadeli now has a sister shop across the street offering locally sourced meats and cooking ingredients.

Butchers Alley offers a range of meats from USDA prime ribeyes to whole chickens and pork bellies. There are also whole ducks, ribs, and a range of local sauces, spices and meat rubs.

“We want to be a neighborhood-accessible butcher shop,” Joe Radford, the butcher, said Monday afternoon inside the Bethesda Avenue store.

The store, which is named after its extended alleyway entrance, also offers a limited selection of produce, milk and sausages. The offerings are designed to complement Pescadeli, which sells a range of seafood.

The new shop opened over the weekend and Radford said regulars from the fish market kept the butcher shop busy.

“So many of our loyal customers just came over after getting fish and either bought a piece of meat or took a look at the new store,” Radford said.

Radford added that the store is trying to source most of its meats regionally—either in Maryland, Virginia or Pennsylvania—while also keeping prices at a level where customers can afford to be regulars.

The cozy spot is the former location of a florist shop and is tucked in tight next to the Bethesda Water Store and More, across from the fish market and Bethesda Crab House.
