Grown-Up Candy Store Opens in Bethesda

Sugarfina opened Friday on Bethesda Row

Unlike many candy stores that overwhelm the senses as well as the shelves, Bethesda Row’s latest addition—Sugarfina—is understated.

The store, which opened Friday, features shelves of neatly arranged small plastic boxes each filled with a specific type of candy ranging from chocolate malt balls to Dom Pérignon champagne gummy bears. Many of the products sold in the Los Angeles-based chain’s shops are sourced from around the world. For example, the hazelnut candies are from Italy and the gummies are from Germany. On Monday, small cubes of the candies were priced at $7, while “bento boxes” filled with alcohol-flavored chocolates like maple bourbon caramels were priced at $28.

Co-founders Rose O’Neill and Josh Resnick came up with the idea for the candy chain after watching the original version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on their third date and decided to develop “the ultimate candy store for grown-ups,” according to Sugarfina’s website.

The store is at 4808 Bethesda Ave., the former location of Knits, Etc.
