The woman struck by a Ride On bus Tuesday morning while crossing Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda succumbed to her injuries Tuesday evening, according to Montgomery County police.

Devika Gunasekere, 67, of Monroe Street in Rockville was crossing Old Georgetown Road toward the east side of the street at about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday. Detectives believe she was in the crosswalk when the Ride On bus, driven by 44-year-old Kenneth Mullen Jr., of Montgomery Village, hit her.

Detectives are still investigating what the traffic signal and pedestrian crossing signal showed at the time of the collision. Mullen was making a left turn from westbound Battery Lane onto southbound Old Georgetown Road at the time of the collision. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four passengers who were on the bus were uninjured.

Gunasekere was a teacher assistant at the Guiding Star Child Development Center, located at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church near the site of the accident.

A bio on the preschool’s website said she started working at the center in May 2013 and enjoyed working with infants, toddlers and 2-year-olds.

The native of Sri Lanka was married with two children.

“She shared she really enjoys working with young children as they remind her of her grandson in Sri Lanka whom she misses,” her bio reads.
