Traffic was at a standstill for nearly 30 minutes after the collision

UPDATED – 5:20 p.m. –  Collisions on the inner loop of I-495 just past the Connecticut Avenue exit left a car overturned in the middle of the roadway and traffic at a standstill late Wednesday afternoon.

County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said an initial collision involving one vehicle happened around 4 p.m. As fire department crews were assisting the driver in that collision, a second vehicle struck a fire department vehicle, overturned and struck another vehicle. The driver of the overturned vehicle had to be extricated and was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Piringer. He said the other three individuals involved in the two collisions suffered moderate, but not serious injuries. No firefighters were injured, Piringer said.

Piringer posted a video showing a silver car resting on its hood, with fire officials working to clear the scene. A black car can also be seen with significant damage in the left lane.

The inner loop was shut down for a short period, but some motorists began to get by the scene on the shoulder around 5 p.m., according to Piringer. By 5:25 p.m., all lanes of the inner loop had been reopened.
