County Council leadership change – The Montgomery County Council is scheduled to elect new officers Tuesday. The current council vice president Nancy Floreen will take over the council presidency from George Leventhal. The council will also select a new council vice president. Leventhal is scheduled to make parting remarks Monday morning at a regular press conference as well as at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday during the council meeting.
Rainy start to week – It’s expected to be a wet start to the week, according to the National Weather Service. Rain is expected to fall Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with highs reaching into the mid-50s those days. The showers should stop Wednesday night. The weather service predicts Thursday and Friday will be clear and sunny with highs in the low-50s. Nighttime lows all week are expected to drop into the upper-30s or low-40s.
Rockville Town Square tree lighting – The retail center Rockville Town Square will celebrate the holidays with a tree lighting Thursday night. The event from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. will also feature live holiday music, an appearance by Santa and ice dancing performances on the outdoor rink in the square at 200 East Middle Lane in Rockville.
Board of Education to review special education report – The Montgomery County Board of Education is scheduled Monday afternoon to discuss an October report from the research company WestEd about public schools’ special education program. WestEd looked at a series of questions in the report and put forth a number of recommendations to improve the special education program that serves approximately 18,000 county students. The report found that while MCPS is “largely compliant” with federal regulations concerning special education standards, the school district could do a better job ensuring that parents understand the special education process as well as improve data collection and transparency when disputes arise.
