Those looking for an unorthodox way to spend the day after Thanksgiving can try the zip line and rope course at Go Ape Treetop Adventure near Lake Needwood in Rockville.

The company is hosting a special “Family Friday” session at the park “designed to encourage families to spend time together outdoors instead of shopping.” Admission is free for a rope course 40 feet above ground for kids ages 15 and younger.

The course will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As for more traditional “Black Friday” activities, Westfield Montgomery mall in Bethesda will open from 6 p.m. to midnight Thursday and reopen at 6 a.m. Friday. A store-by-store list of pre-Black Friday and Black Friday deals are available on the mall’s website. Westfield Wheaton mall will operate using the same special hours.

Current Boutique, the trendy consignment shop in downtown Bethesda, is offering 20 percent off for in-store and online purchases.

About a dozen shops and restaurants at Bethesda Row plan Black Friday deals or promotions and many will extend those promotions to Saturday to celebrate Small Business Saturday. The first 250 customers on Saturday at Sassanova Boutique and Secolari will receive a Bethesda Row shopping bag.

Friday or Saturday could be a good day to see the holiday light display at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton. The botanical garden’s Garden of Lights will return from a one-year hiatus starting Friday and be open nightly from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
