Update 4 p.m. – A 60-year-old woman was transported to a hospital Thursday evening in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Plyers Mill Road.

Police initially said the woman suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision that happened around 5:45 p.m., but her condition was later upgraded and she is expected to survive.

Police spokesman Rick Goodale said in an email the woman was crossing Connecticut Avenue in a marked crosswalk when a vehicle on Plyers Mill Road made a right turn on a red light and struck her. The driver of the vehicle was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Police did not release the names of the driver or the woman.

The intersection was closed for about two hours while the police collision reconstruction unit worked at the scene. Connecticut Avenue was reopened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
