A bus full of students returning to Goshen Elementary School in Gaithersburg Wednesday afternoon were evacuated from their bus on northbound I-270 after antifreeze started leaking into the back of the bus, according to a spokeswoman for Montgomery County Public Schools.
The students sheltered on a second bus that was traveling with the bus that started leaking on the interstate near Montrose Road, according to Gboyinde Onijala, a spokeswoman for MCPS.
Onijala said none of the students or staff were injured in the incident and that 911 was called as a precaution. She said a third bus was sent to pick up the students and return them to the Gaithersburg elementary school.
Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said the incident was reported around 2 p.m.
The students were in the North Bethesda area attending a concert at the Music Center at Strathmore. Strathmore hosts the students every year to expose the elementary students to classical music. This year, second grade MCPS students are attending the National Philharmonic concerts from Nov. 17 – 20 and an estimated 12,500 students are expected to visit Strathmore during that time.
