Sweetgreen Bethesda closes for renovations
The salad chain Sweetgreen announced Wednesday it has closed its Bethesda Row location until December to renovate the restaurant. The location plans to reopen December 1. Sweetgreen will donate all the proceeds from the re-opening day to Bethesda Elementary School, according to the company. At the beginning of October, Sweetgreen took out a construction permit with the county stating it would be doing approximately $90,000 in renovations in the existing dining room and replacing some of the kitchen equipment.
Post Critic finds “uneven” cooking at PassionFish Bethesda
Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema’s review of PassionFish Bethesda was published Wednesday and it’s pretty tough on the new restaurant, which opened in mid-September at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda avenues. “Some dishes make me wonder if the staff ever sat and ate it as customers would,” Sietsema writes. He tried Ipswich clams that he found chewy, squid ringlets “that could double as rubber bands” and roasted Brussels sprouts “hard as marbles.” He also makes a recommendation—go for the dishes with the fewest amount of ingredients. The critic, however, did enjoy the ambience.
Sligo Café to change to Korean concept
Sligo Café in Silver Spring revealed this week it will change to a Korean concept after closing on Oct. 31 to rebrand the restaurant that formerly specialized in Southern comfort food. Katie Golden, the general manager, said they’re now finalizing the new menu. The restaurant is planning to re-open later this month.
Bowlmor Lanes introduces new menu items
Bowlmor Lanes, a national chain of bowling allies that has a location on Westbard Avenue in Bethesda, introduced a new menu at the beginning of November that has some untraditional menu items. The new menu items include pizza cupcakes (pizza dough shaped like a cupcake, stuffed with red sauce and a choice of meats and topped with mozzarella cheese) and a S’mores skillet (graham crackers with melted milk chocolate topped with marshmallows served in a cast-iron skillet). The bowling chain is known for untraditional menu items; last year it introduced a 5-pound “Behemoth Burger” with a 14-inch hamburger patty designed for sharing.
