Silver Spring Zombie Walk – Saturday night – Sligo Avenue, Silver Spring
Halloween is approaching and it’s time for several hundred “zombies” to stroll the streets of downtown Silver Spring. The 7th annual Silver Spring Zombie Walk takes place this Saturday. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. when walkers wearing makeup and dressed as the undead meet on Sligo Avenue between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street. A costume contest is scheduled for 8:25 p.m. outside Sligo Café on Sligo Avenue. The walk begins at 9 p.m. and will travel a route along Georgia Avenue, Ellsworth Avenue, Fenton Street and Colesville Road. Following the walk, a screening of Day of the Dead will take place at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center on Colesville Road and after-parties are planned at Sidebar (8081 Georgia Ave.) and The Quarry House (8402 Georgia Ave.)
YouTube Piano Sensation to Play Strathmore – Saturday night – The Music Center at Strathmore, North Bethesda
Valentina Lisitsa, a pianist who has garnered more than 95 million views on YouTube, will perform Saturday night at The Music Center at Strathmore with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Lisitsa will perform Mozart’s D-minor piano concerto with the orchestra. The performance will also include Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 and Prospero’s Rooms, a musical composition by Baltimore composer Christopher Rouse modeled after the gothic theme of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. Tickets range from $20 to $99.
Piketoberfest – Sunday afternoon – Pike & Rose, North Bethesda
Pike & Rose will welcome fall this weekend with Piketoberfest. Festivities include food tastings from the development’s restaurants, including Summer House Santa Monica, Del Frisco’s Grille and City Perch, as well as a beer garden hosted by the popular Washington, D.C., restaurants Birch & Barley and ChurchKey. The free Sunday event runs from noon to 4 p.m.
Somerset Classic 8k and 2k – Sunday morning – Somerset Elementary School, 5811 Warwick Place, Chevy Chase
The Somerset Back-to-School Classic 8k and 2k road races will wind through the streets surrounding Somerset Elementary School on Sunday morning. Registration for the races is available online and will also take place at the elementary school from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Both races cost $35 for adults and $20 for students 18 and younger. The races begin after runners check-in at the event from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Proceeds from the event will fund afterschool programs, classroom supplies, library books and community service programs at the elementary school.
Iration: Hotting Up Tour – Saturday night – The Fillmore Silver Spring
Iration, a reggae rock group from Santa Barbara, California, will take The Fillmore stage Saturday night as part of its Hotting Up Tour. The tour is named after the group’s new album that was released in August. Opening acts include The Green, The Movement and Hours Eastly. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20.
Tito Puente Jr. and His Orchestra – Friday night – Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club
Latin jazz percussionist Tito Puente Jr., the son of legendary American mambo musician Tito Puente, brings his high-energy act to Bethesda Friday. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. There’s also a $10 drink minimum per guest.
