Updated Thursday – A woman was killed Wednesday night when she was struck by a driver in a vehicle traveling on southbound River Road south of Springfield Drive in Bethesda, according to Montgomery County police.
Police are investigating the collision, which occurred just before 7 p.m in the 5500 block of River Road near Kenwood Country Club. Responding officers said the woman was declared dead at the scene.
The driver, 30-year-old Kenneth Samuel Bravman of Washington, D.C., remained at the scene, police said.
Bill Wydro, who was at the scene, said the victim was his 95-year-old mother, Marge Wydro, who has lived at a house in the 6000 block of Springfield Drive since 1963.
Wydro said his mother was crossing River Road to attend a duckpin bowling league at Kenwood Country Club, where she was a member. He said he was alerted to the collision by a neighbor across the street who checks up on his mother almost every day.
“She knows this is a dangerous intersection,” Wydro said.
He said his mother regularly participated in bridge games and bowling leagues and that her last job before retirement was as a physical education teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools elementary schools.
Marge Wydro was a great grandmother who wanted to live independently and age-in-place at her home in Bethesda, where she could be near Kenwood, her son said. He said that when he would leave after visits she would always come down the stairs, go to the door and wave to him as he left.
"That's the last thing I would see before I leave," Wydro said.
Police said Wydro was crossing River Road in the area of a marked crosswalk when she was hit. Detectives are investigating what the traffic signal and pedestrian crossing showed at the time of the collision.
