A downtown Bethesda gas station reportedly has a new owner.

Washington, D.C.-based Douglas Development recently bought the Exxon station at 7975 Old Georgetown Road for $5.8 million, according to The Montgomery Newsletter, a bi-weekly roundup of local real estate news.

A representative for Douglas Development didn’t immediately return a request for comment Tuesday. The gas station is adjacent to the company’s 11-floor office building at 7979 Old Georgetown Road. That building was fully renovated in 2007.

Redevelopment of the gas station site doesn’t appear to be in the developer’s immediate plans.

The gas station is one of just four  remaining in downtown Bethesda. One of those stations, a Sunoco at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Battery Lane, is slated for redevelopment as part of a project by Donohoe Development.

Five gas stations in the downtown area have closed over the past decade, including the Shell at 7628 Old Georgetown Road and Exxon at 7100 Wisconsin Ave.

Construction has started on a TD Bank branch at the 7628 Old Georgetown Road site and a 12-story, 139-unit apartment building from Washington Property Co. is under construction at 7100 Wisconsin Ave.

Developer Bainbridge is planning a 14-story, 225-unit apartment building for the former Exxon station at 7340 Wisconsin Ave. Bainbridge bought that property for about $24 million, according to The Montgomery Newsletter.
