East West Highway Paving to Begin This Week

The Bethesda portion of the road was pothole-ridden for the previous week

Updated Tuesday – East West Highway and Montgomery Avenue are scheduled to start the repaving process Monday night after a wet week delayed contractors from fixing the rough, pothole laden roadway between Wisconsin and Connecticut avenues.

Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman David Buck said contractors are scheduled to start repaving the roadway Monday night and the roadS should be repaved in about 10 nights. He said crews will work from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday to Thursday to repave the road and the whole road should be completed by mid- to late-October depending on the weather.

Buck said Monday that crews were out Sunday night filling potholes on the road. The old asphalt on the road was torn up during the now-completed milling process, which left behind a bumpy roadway.

The repaving is a central piece of SHA’s $2.5 million resurfacing project of East West Highway, which started in the spring. As part of the project SHA also upgraded the roadway to meet Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and installed new traffic lights and pedestrian signals. Montgomery Avenue runs eastbound from Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda before joining East West Highway.
