Ayungo was one of more than 50 who have or will rappel down the side of the 2 Bethesda Metro Center office building throughout the day as part of the Shatterproof Challenge. Shatterproof, a New York City-based nonprofit provides information and resources for people living with drug addiction and does lobbying in Washington. It’s hosting more than 20 of the rappelling events throughout the country this year.

On Tuesday, the event hit Bethesda, where participants raised money through pledges before rappelling.

Ayungo, executive director at Bethesda gym FitnessWise and president of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rotary Club, made the descent in memory of his father, who died in part because of alcohol addiction.

Local corporate sponsors included Wells Fargo bank and hotel chains including Rockville-based Choice Hotels, Chesapeake Lodging Trust and La Salle Hotel Properties. Choice Hotels CEO Steve Joyce raised more than $56,000 for his descent.
