It appears Faryab Afghan Cuisine in Bethesda has closed.
Since mid-August, the restaurant has been closed with at least two different posted signs explaining why. The first one was posted in August and said the restaurant would be closed for employee vacations and remodeling. The second sign, which is currently posted at the restaurant, says it will be closed “until further notice” for renovations.
However, there appears to be almost no activity inside the Cordell Avenue restaurant. An employee at the cigar store adjacent to the restaurant said Thursday he has not seen anyone performing any work inside the space, however he has seen someone periodically pick up the mail.
The restaurant’s phone doesn’t appear to be disconnected, though its voicemail wasn’t accepting new messages Friday. Attempts to contact the owner, David Hashem, were not successful. According to Maryland real estate records, Hashem also owns the property, which was assessed at $1.01 million in 2014.
Google is currently listing the restaurant as “permanently closed” in a box next to search results about the Afghan eatery.
The restaurant opened in 1997 and throughout its 18-year run it has been lauded for its traditional Afghan cuisine.
