Rockville Confederate statue discussion Monday – The city of Rockville is inviting local residents to City Hall Monday night to discuss the future of a Confederate statue next to the Red Brick Courthouse. The discussion, which will include local historical and cultural experts, is scheduled to start at 6. On Friday, County Executive Ike Leggett, after initially staying out of the controversy, ordered that the statue be removed from the courthouse grounds.
Predatory towing bill scheduled for vote – The Montgomery County Council is scheduled Tuesday to take action on a bill designed to limit predatory towing. The bill, which was first proposed by council member Roger Berliner, includes provisions requiring owners of private parking lots to document nonconsensual tows and to maintain photographic evidence showing that vehicles were illegally parked prior to being towed. Towing companies in the region have opposed the legislation.
Liquor control committee to hold public hearing – The council committee examining the county’s Department of Liquor Control is inviting the public to discuss proposed reforms to the department at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Council Office Building in Rockville.
Over the past eight months the committee has evaluated the department’s operations, which have stirred controversy. Perhaps the committee’s proposal with the most impact is a move to privatize sales of “special order” products, which would mostly affect fine wines and craft beers. Area restaurants as well as beer and wine stores have complained to the committee that it’s often difficult and expensive to buy products that aren’t mass produced from the DLC, which controls the wholesale distribution of all alcohol in the county.
