Two 18-year-old men were killed in a single-vehicle collision on a suburban street in North Potomac late Thursday night, according to Montgomery County police.

Police said Friday the two men were riding in the backseat of a 2006 Acura TSX when it collided with a tree around 11:50 p.m. in the 13800 block of Dufief Mill Road, not far from Travilah Elementary School. The two men were declared dead at the scene.

The 18-year-old male driver was transported to Suburban Hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police spokeswoman Natasha Plotnikov. A 17-year-old boy, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, also was transported to Suburban with minor injuries, according to Plotnikov.

Police plan to release the names of the victims after their families have been notified, Plotnikov said.

Plotnikov said the vehicle left the roadway, struck the tree head-on, then struck several fences and came to rest in someone’s driveway. Detectives are investigating if speed and alcohol were involved in the collision. Police also believe a lack of seatbelts may have contributed to the injuries and deaths that resulted from the collision.

Pictures from the scene show the car burnt out, missing its rear axle and flipped onto its roof.
