Washington Post food critic gushes over Barrel & Crow

Noted hater of the Bethesda dining scene—Tom Sietsema—writes that he has found a local restaurant he likes. “The pope has yet to elope, and pigs have yet to fly. But something almost as amazing recently came to pass. I had dinner in Bethesda, and I liked it—a lot,” Sietsema wrote in his review of the recently opened Barrel & Crow.

The Post’s food critic gave the Cordell Avenue restaurant two and a half stars (a good/excellent rating). He says he enjoyed the crab beignets, meatballs, fried green tomatoes, short ribs and chicken and waffles.

The restaurant opened in May in Bethesda’s Woodmont Triangle area. The owners—Patrick Forest and Laura Houlihan—worked together at Grapeseed Bistro, which is next door to Barrel & Crow, before opening the restaurant.

Not Your Average Joe’s slightly delays opening

The large American restaurant filling the former Hamburger Hamlet location on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda will open a week later than initially planned. The 7,000-square-foot restaurant now plans to open July 13. Earlier this month the company announced it planned to open July 5; at that time the company said it was looking to hire about 100 workers before the opening.

The location will be Not Your Average Joe’s 23rd—most are located in New England, but there’s also one in Gaithersburg.

“The residents of Bethesda are ready for a new dining experience,” Steve Silverstein, the company’s CEO and founder, said in a statement. “With our chef-driven menu, affordable prices, warm atmosphere and bend-over-backwards service, we are confident the people of Bethesda will love our approach to casual dining.”
