Updated Wednesday morning — A fast-spreading fire in a row of Silver Spring townhomes led to a massive Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service response Tuesday and the temporary closure of East West Highway.

MCFRS was called to the Chevy Chase Crest Condos in the 1700 block of East West Highway at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to department spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Piringer said there were no injuries, though several townhomes were evacuated and four adults and some pets were displaced. The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in the attic of one of the townhomes. Piringer said it caused about $250,000 in damage.

The fire spread to several townhomes and also to other “concealed areas” near the roofs of the townhomes from 1752 to 1762 East West Highway, Piringer said.

About 75 firefighters were on the scene.

The response had East West Highway between 16th Street and Sundale Road blocked for about three hours as crews battled the fire.
