Police Blotter: ‘Pigeon Drop’ Scam Reported in North Bethesda

The following incidents were reported to Montgomery County police from May 18 to 26

North Bethesda

Scam at Federal Plaza

Two women approached another woman at Federal Plaza in the 12200 block of Rockville Pike around 3 p.m. May 22, claiming they found a bag with a large sum of cash. The two women convinced the other woman to withdraw money and jewelry from her bank as “collateral” in order to split the money supposedly found by the pair. But when it came time to split the funds, the two women disappeared. This type of scam is commonly referred to as a “pigeon drop,” according to police, who did not provide detailed descriptions of the two suspects.

Indecent exposure on Greentree Road

A person reported seeing a man urinating in the parking lot of the Green Tree Shelter at 6301 Greentree Road around 6:45 p.m. May 21. Police said the suspect is a 47-year-old Bethesda man, who has been located.

Chevy Chase

Residential burglary on Bradley Boulevard

Property was taken from a residence in the 5000 block of Bradley Boulevard sometime between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. May 21. Police did not report any signs of forced entry.

Kensington

Residential burglary on Farragut Avenue

Property was taken from a residence in the 3500 block of Farragut Avenue between 5 and 7 p.m. May 20. There were no reported signs of forced entry.

Rockville

Verizon store burglarized

Two men took items around 1 p.m. May 20 from the Verizon Wireless store at 20 Maryland Ave.

Commercial burglary on North Washington Street

Someone broke into Investment Properties Inc. at 11 N. Washington St. and took property sometime between May 22 and 24.

Downtown Silver Spring

Tow truck employees assaulted

A 30-year-old Silver Spring woman was arrested after allegedly assaulting two tow truck employees near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Spring Street around 4:45 p.m. May 20.

Vehicles burglarized at KFC, Whole Foods

Items were taken from five vehicles parked at either the KFC at 720 Blair Road or at Whole Foods at 833 Wayne Ave. during the early morning hours of May 20. The vehicles showed signs of forced entry and police believe the incidents may be related.
